Driving an RV to Estes Park: routes, park road limits and winter rules
Published 2026-10-17 · Updated 2026-10-17 · Facts from official NPS, Forest Service, Colorado DOT and Larimer County pages, each linked.
The NPS lists three ways in from Denver: US-36 via Boulder (66 miles, about 1.5–2 hours, from I-25 exit 217), Highway 66 from I-25 exit 243 (71 miles), and the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (CO-119, CO-72 and CO-7; 108 miles, 2.5–3 hours). From Loveland, US-34 runs up the Big Thompson Canyon. [NPS]
The US-36 and Highway 66 routes meet in Lyons and climb US-36 into Estes Park; Larimer County's Hermit Park directions put its entrance about 16.5 miles up US-36 from Lyons. [Larimer County]
US-36 via Lyons vs. US-34 through Big Thompson Canyon
Colorado DOT says US-34 between Loveland and Estes Park is open to all traffic. The canyon highway was rebuilt after the 2013 flood washed out whole sections of road. The NPS directions page still warns that construction work can cause delays of up to 20 minutes. [Colorado DOT][NPS]
Neither CDOT nor the NPS publishes a length or trailer restriction for US-36 or US-34 into Estes Park. Check COtrip for closures, incidents and chain or traction law status before you set out. [COtrip (Colorado DOT road conditions)][Colorado DOT][NPS]
Trail Ridge Road (US-34 through the park)
Trail Ridge Road covers the 48 miles from Estes Park to Grand Lake, with 11 miles above treeline and a high point of 12,183 feet. [NPS]
The park compendium's vehicle-size rules name only two roads, Old Fall River Road and Bear Lake Road. It sets no separate length limit for Trail Ridge Road, so state vehicle size limits apply there as on any park road. [NPS]
Trail Ridge Road closes to through travel from about mid-October to late May, which cuts the east side off from Timber Creek and Grand Lake. Check park road status before you go. [NPS][NPS]

Campground length limits
NPS maximum RV/trailer lengths: Moraine Park 40 ft, Glacier Basin 35 ft (the group loop is closed to RVs), Aspenglen 30 ft and Timber Creek 30 ft. [NPS]
The Forest Service status table lists the longest parking spur at Olive Ridge as 40 ft and at Peaceful Valley and Camp Dick as 45 ft. Your RV or trailer has to fit the site's spur. [USDA Forest Service]
Private parks' site lengths come from their listings. Use the rig-fit tool or the hubs to filter by length and power: Rig fit · Big-rig sites · Electric hookups & amps
Winter driving: Colorado's traction law
CDOT can put the passenger vehicle traction law into effect on any state highway. While it's in effect you need tires with at least 3/16-inch tread that are winter or all-weather rated (mountain-snowflake, M+S or M/S), or chains or an approved alternative traction device. Under the chain law, CDOT's last step before closing a highway, every vehicle needs chains or an approved alternative. [Colorado DOT]
All of these facts are also in our open campgrounds dataset (/campgrounds.json).
