Camping inside Rocky Mountain National Park vs the Estes Valley

Published 2026-10-17 · Updated 2026-10-17 · Facts from official NPS, Forest Service and Recreation.gov pages, each linked.

The choice comes down to a few verified differences: park campgrounds include timed entry and sit in the park, but have no water or sewer hookups and cap RV length; campgrounds in the Estes Valley offer hookups and more dates, but you'll need timed entry to enter the park in season. The table lists every stay in our data; anything a source doesn't state shows as Not listed. [NPS][NPS]

Inside the park

Moraine Park, Glacier Basin, Aspenglen and Timber Creek require summer reservations on Recreation.gov, with no same-day sales; Longs Peak is first come, first served for tents only. RV and trailer limits: Moraine Park 40 ft, Glacier Basin 35 ft, Aspenglen 30 ft, Timber Creek 30 ft. Only Moraine Park has electric sites (49, in Loops B and C), and no park campground has water or sewer hookups. [NPS][NPS]

A campground reservation counts as timed entry from 1 p.m. on arrival day; Timber Creek's excludes the Bear Lake Road corridor. Every park campground has shared food storage lockers. Stays are limited to 7 nights parkwide from May 1 to October 15. [NPS][NPS][NPS]

Estes Valley and the national forest

Private campgrounds and RV parks in and around town are where full hookups, cabins and glamping are. Their hookups, site lengths and seasons come from each listing; we show Not listed where a listing doesn't say.

The Forest Service campgrounds south of town (Olive Ridge, Peaceful Valley, Camp Dick, Pawnee) have no electricity or hookups; RVs must fit each site's parking spur (longest spur 40–45 ft per the Forest Service status table), and sites with a tent pad have a bear locker. None of these stays includes park entry. [USDA Forest Service][USDA Forest Service][USDA Forest Service]

All of these facts are also in our open campgrounds dataset (/campgrounds.json).
